Jackson County United Way will stage a Poverty Simulation at 8 a.m. Oct. 30 at Calvary Baptist Church, 1202 N. Ewing St., Seymour.
The simulation will show participants the reality of living in poverty for a month. Participants will be assigned a set of circumstances and walk from various tables, where volunteers will present unexpected events that families in poverty face.
The event is held in partnership with Anchor House, Community Foundation of Jackson County and Jackson County Industrial Development Corp.
“The simulation will help bring to light some of the tough choices that those living in poverty must make,” said Maci Baurle, executive director of Jackson County United Way. “Participants are randomly assigned the life of an actual individual who lives in poverty. The characters are based on real people who are served in our community.”
It is free to participate in the simulation, and those interested can register at jacsy.org/povertysimulation. The event also needs volunteers, and those willing to help can also use the link to sign up.
