Crothersville Elementary School Launches Robotics

Crothersville Elementary School Launches Robotics

Thanks to a $10,000 donation from Aisin Drivetrain and JCIDC covering the cost of the VEX Robotic Equipment, Crothersville 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders were able to attend robotics camp for free in June.  This was the first time for the camp to be held in Crothersville.

The school is hoping to jumpstart an interest in robotics enough to continue through the school year.

When the camp began all of the pieces for three robots were in boxes.  The kids had to follow instructions to put them together and then figure out how to control them without help from the teachers.  Olivia Cain, one of the teachers, liked seeing the kids succeed during the assembly process.  “It’s very exciting to see them so excited that they got to work on something on their own,” she said.

The next step for the kids is to take what they learned at camp and participate in competitions beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.

Guardian Bikes Coming to Seymour

Guardian Bikes Coming to Seymour

Guardian Bikes will begin operations in Freeman Field Industrial Park in Seymour moving from Austin, Texas.  Seymour Redevelopment Commission approved a four-year $100,000 ECLIPSE loan to support the company’s project that will begin with logistics and expand into manufacturing and assembly.  Seymour City Council also approved a $275,000 tax abatement for Guardian’s initial investment for equipment and machinery.

JCIDC developed the ECLIPSE program to provide a cash loan to help offset startup costs based on job creation.  Loan proceeds come from tax increment finance or economic development income tax funds, and the amount of the loan is tied directly to the number of permanent, full-time jobs and wages.  The program is designed to forgive the loan.  Each year, Guardian will submit a compliance form to the redevelopment commission and city council to show jobs created, wages and residency of employees.  Based on compliance, the boards would approve loan forgiveness or require the company to make that year’s loan payment.

Guardian currently assembles children’s bikes that are equipped with Sure-Stop, a braking system that allows bikes to stop faster and safer.  Their technology is patented across the world and they are currently designing adult bicycles to grow their business.  Guardian is expected to total nearly $7 million in investment and 100 employees by 2026.

SEP Honored For Safety

Cummins Seymour Engine Plant has achieve certification in the Indiana Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) as a “STAR” site…the first Cummins facility to achieve this designation.

VPP “STAR” certification is the highest level of certification a worksite can achieve, and Cummins employees were honored at a ceremony on Sept. 22nd.

“The management, employees and staff at Cummins Seymour Engine Plant have an approach that prioritizes safety and health to the forefront of everything they do,” said Indiana Department of Labor (IDOL) Commissioner Rick J. Ruble, who attended the event. “This prioritization places Cummins Seymour Engine Plant into an elite group of worker safety and health-minded Indiana businesses.”

To participate in VPP, a company must develop, implement and maintain an exemplary worker safety and health management system and complete a comprehensive workplace safety and health audit conducted by IDOL staff and safety professionals from a pool of Special Government Employees (SGEs). Additionally, the site’s workplace injury and illness rates must be below the national industry average for its respective industry.

Currently, 75 Indiana workplaces have achieved VPP certification – 73 are designated as “STAR” worksites.
